Challengers Set to Have Independent Season Amongst COVID-19 Cancellations

EUGENE, ORE — The Eugene Challengers baseball team will host their independent season opener at P.K. Park on Saturday, June 20 with limited fan attendance.

The Challengers are a local American Legion baseball team made of 14-19-year olds recruited from surrounding Lane County high schools. They have been associated with the American Legion Baseball organization for 40 years but are becoming an independent organization for the season. As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, American Legion has canceled their nationwide World Series, playoff tournament, and all local regional seasons.

As their normal home stadium, located at North Eugene High School, is not accessible due to the 4J school district shutdown, they will play their season at PK Park. Home games will allow fans up to 300 fans in the stadium, and strict social distancing guidelines will be enforced. As PK Park has a capacity of 4000 spectators under normal conditions, the extra seating will be used to ensure proper social distancing measures are taken.

The Eugene Challengers are the only live sports program in Eugene that is currently operational through Summer 2020.
